Park Activities

The Tomo-Kahni State Historic Park: Kawaiisu Native American Village was created as a unit of California State Parks in 1993 to protect and preserve the integrity of the location. Nestled atop a ridge in the Tehachapi Mountains, overlooking Sand Canyon to the east and the Tehachapi valley to the west, Tomo-Kahni, or "Winter Village," was the site of a Kawaiisu (Nuooah) Village.

A must see park with a guide through many archaeological areas. Not strenuous at all and lots of information given on the hike.

This is a very interesting place to visit. Great archeological sites with bedrock mortars, awl sharpening rock, rock rings at winter village, and pictographs. Saw a snake (non-poisonous) right at the start of the walk. Lots of interesting plants like chia and herbs used for medicinal needs. Docents are well versed in local lore and facts. Well worth the walk in.

The tour is a nice walk (not as strenuous as it would seem from the tour descriptions, it is a comfortable hike) through nature, with the added bonus of Kawaiisu artefacts. If you live in the area, you must visit at least once.

Due to the extremely sensitive nature of the site, Tomo-Kahni is available to the public by tour only.
