Insider Tips

While it may seem obvious to most, stay on the trail! Trails have been made in a certain way to make your adventure as enjoyable and safe as possible, so straying off the path can be a bad idea. Not only does leaving the trail destroy the environment that the animals call home, but it can also put you in danger. By going off the trail, you may threaten fragile ecosystems, step into a poisonous bush, or find yourself in a precarious situation.

Detroit's riverside biking paradise!

For anyone looking for an urban outdoor adventure, look no further than Milliken State Park.  Nestled along the Detroit River, near the base of the Renaissance Center, this urban state park offers fishing, walking, biking, and more.  As part of the RiverWalk, the riverside trail that runs the length of downtown Detroit, the newly opened Dequindre Cut offers walkers and bikers the an easy walk or ride from the river front up to Eastern Market, one of the nation's largest farm markets and an icon of Detroit.

Easy access to museums, theatres, and professional sporting venues also makes this a great place to park your car and explore the city by bike.  Or for boaters, attach your bike to your boat, then rent a slip in the Milliken State Harbor for an inexpensive and unique downtown Detroit lodging and entertainment experience.

Packing For Electronics

Stay in touch. For any electronic you bring with you, make sure it’s charged fully before setting out, that you have extra batteries on hand.  A hike can take longer than expected, and you don’t want to be without a way to communicate back home. Always let someone know where you are going.

GPS

Know where you are. Pack a map or GPS. Some trails can lead into other ones, and if you miss a sign or a turn, you could be in a completely different area. A map or a GPS can help you orientate yourself and avoid needing a rescue in just a few minutes. Most importantly, make sure that you know how to use your GPS before you head out into the wilderness.
