Insider Tips

Many parks are working hard to offer great opportunities for everyone to enjoy their facilities. When a park says it’s ADA accessible, that can mean universal access to the buildings, fishing docks, trails, and more.  While some parts of the park may be ADA accessible, it’s best to have help just in case you find a part that isn’t. Also, make sure you bring a cell phone to call someone if you need help.  Before you head out, know what is available and if it fits your plan for the day.

Michigan State Parks Provide Universally Accessible Outdoor Experiences
Michigan State Parks & Recreation Areas Michigan State Parks & Recreation Areas

Over the years the DNR has made significant strides in ensuring camping, swimming and picnicking facilities are assessable and barrier-free and is committed to its continued efforts to see that outdoor recreation opportunities and facilities are built or improved in order to continue to provide quality and universally accessible outdoor experiences to its visitors.

Regulations provide for permits to hunt from vehicles and use specialized equipment for persons with disabilities. Many of the park trails are paved to accommodate individuals of all abilities. All of the DNR Visitor Centers are accessible as are several of the watchable wildlife sites and viewing platforms and many of the state parks offer accessible campsites. Rental cabins, tents, tepees and yurts are available for enjoying an alternative overnight stay.

New Mobility Mat Opens TC State Park Beach to Everyone

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources has taken an initial step in insuring everyone has access to the water at its beaches with the installation of a mobility mat at the Traverse City State Park Beach in 2011.

The “Mobi-Mat” is a stationary, 60-inch-wide fabric that creates a portable sidewalk on the sand. The Traverse City State Park installed 100 feet of the product to provide universal accessibility to the waters of Grand Traverse Bay from the parking area.

Along with installing the mat the park has funded the purchase of a specially designed, water-buoyant wheelchair to loan to visitors. The chair can transport a disabled swimmer directly into the water for a refreshing dip and enable him to ease into a swimming position for exercise and a refreshing dip.

Newaygo State Park’s “Hookin’ Up Heroes” pro/am Fishing Tournament

Newaygo State Park and area sponsors team up to offer an annual “Hookin’ Up Heroes” fishing tournament. The event teams disabled and combat veterans as well as active duty service members with competitive anglers in a BASS style pro/am tournament on the stat park’s Hardy Pond. To learn more about this year’s tournament, call Ron Monroe, unit supervisor at Newaygo State Park, 231-590-2376 or email monroer@michigan.gov.
